“THE THERAPY OF AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDERS”
Psychologist ANCA NEAGU
Association of Applied Behavioral Therapy
The number of people diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorders is growing – it is expected that the number of people with autism will exceed the number of people with diabetes, cancer and AIDS altogether – autism has become a social problem.
The society must be aware and understand what this disease is and the importance of appropriate intervention. Children with autistic spectrum disorders need to start a program of applied behavioral analysis at the lowest age possible in order to help them have a proper future.
The results of the research following the application of Applied Behavior Analysis showed that if therapy is started early enough – before the age of 4 years, is intensive – 20-30 even 40 hours of therapy a week and continued until two years, between 20 and 47% of children can be like other kids their age. All these children can lead more productive and fulfilled lives from a social point of view.
When applying ABA to children with autistic spectrum disorders, a team of therapists coordinated by a specialized psychologist in applied behavioral analysis must be strengthened, therapy should be done several hours per day (20-30 hours per week) and for each therapist a session takes between two – three hours with breaks. The team of therapists must follow a training program in this form of therapy.
